Welcome to my blog! I'd love to connect and chat about a future session! In the mean time, take a look around the blog! Don't forget to stop and say Hello!
Hey there, mama-to-be! 💛
If you’re anything like I was, you might be feeling a little overwhelmed with all the advice (and maybe the lack of real information) about giving birth. There’s so much to think about—birth plans, hospital bags, pain relief, who to call, what to pack… it’s a lot!
But don’t worry—I’ve got you.
After years of newborns from birth to studio, around Mansfield, Ohio, I’ve heard and seen just about everything. I’ve also noticed that a lot of moms walk into labor thinking they have to do things a certain way, when really… you have options!
So, I put together a list of 10 things your doctor probably didn’t tell you about giving birth in Mansfield, Ohio—to help you feel more confident, informed, and ready for one of the most incredible days of your life.
And if something here sparks your curiosity, bring it up with your doctor or midwife. This is your birth, and you deserve to understand your choices.
Did you know you have options beyond a traditional hospital birth?
While many families choose Ohio Health Mansfield or Avita for their delivery, some opt for a birth center or even a home birth, when giving birth in Mansfield, Ohio. These settings can feel calmer and more personal, with fewer interruptions and a more natural pace.
For low-risk pregnancies, home or birth center deliveries can be just as safe—and often more comfortable—than hospital births.
💭 Ask your provider: “Would you support me if I worked with a home birth midwife or birth center near Mansfield?”
Epidurals are common, but they’re not your only choice! You can explore natural options like breathing techniques, massage, hypnobirthing, warm baths, and even essential oils.
Some hospitals also offer nitrous oxide (laughing gas) or spinal blocks.
💭 Ask your doctor: “What pain relief methods do your patients use besides epidurals?”
Some births, moms powered through with movement and music, and others where an epidural was absolutely the right call. The key is knowing your options so you can decide what’s best for you in the moment.
Never underestimate the power of a good playlist. 🎶
Music can help lower your heart rate, calm your nerves, and make the room feel more “you.” Whether it’s worship music, acoustic guitar, or something upbeat for motivation, it can set the tone for a peaceful birth.
💭 Ask: “Can I bring a small speaker or play music in the delivery room?”
Warm water can ease the tension of contractions and help your body relax. Although the closest birth center that perform water births are in Columbus, some centers may allow you to labor in the shower.
💭 Ask your provider: “Can I use water during labor, and are birth pools available?”
Even if you’re not planning a full water birth, soaking or standing under a warm shower can help you focus and breathe through the waves.
Let’s get real for a minute. Most women do. It’s totally normal!
When you’re pushing, your body uses the same muscles for both—so it’s just part of the process. Nurses see it all the time, and trust me, no one cares. They’re focused on helping you meet your baby safely.
So take a deep breath and let that fear go—it’s one less thing to worry about.
Despite what we see on TV, lying flat isn’t your only option.
Standing, squatting, kneeling, or even hands-and-knees can help your baby move down more efficiently. Movement helps gravity work in your favor and may even shorten your labor.
💭 Ask your doctor: “What birthing positions are you comfortable supporting?”
As I mom who has birthed four children, I’m aware that many different positions can help ease the pain, or promote your baby to move with ease through the birth canal. Whatever helps a mama feel strong and in control is the right one.
A doula provides emotional, physical, and informational support—not just for unmedicated births, but any birth.
They’re there to comfort you, guide your partner, and help communicate your wishes to the medical team. Many doulas in Mansfield, Ashland, and surrounding areas offer packages for birth and postpartum support.
💭 Ask your provider: “Do you work with doulas often? Any you recommend locally?”
Doulas can quietly hold space for a mama, breathing right alongside her. Their calm presence makes such a difference.
Gone are the days when every hospital said “no food or drink.” Many now allow light snacks or clear fluids during early labor to help keep your energy up.
💭 Ask: “Under what circumstances would I not be allowed to eat or drink?”
Labor is a marathon, not a sprint. Fueling your body (and staying hydrated) can keep you stronger and more focused.
Your body was designed to do this, but your mind can either help or hinder that process.
Visualization, meditation, and affirmations can make a huge difference in how you experience labor. Whether it’s praying, practicing deep breathing, using birth affirmations, or working with a hypnobirthing coach in Mansfield—your mindset truly matters.
💭 Ask: “Are there any local classes or workshops that teach relaxation or breathing techniques for labor?”
The calmer and more confident you feel, the more smoothly your body can do its thing.
Sometimes, despite all the planning, birth takes an unexpected turn—and that’s okay.
C-sections can be lifesaving, and your doctor and nurses will take great care of you. Talk with your provider about what to expect if that becomes part of your story.
💭 Ask your doctor: “In what situations would a C-section be necessary?”
Even if your birth doesn’t go exactly how you envisioned, it can still be beautiful, sacred, and empowering.
Giving birth in Mansfield, Ohio doesn’t have to feel intimidating or rigid. Whether you’re at a hospital, birth center, or at home, remember—you get to ask questions, explore your options, and decide what feels right for you.
No matter how your baby enters the world, it’s going to be one of the most meaningful days of your life.
And if you’re hoping to have those precious moments captured forever, I’d love to chat about a maternity or newborn session! I’ve seen firsthand how every story unfolds differently—and that’s what makes yours so special.
